The Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support, the Hon. Dr. Mike Kelly AM announced on 12 February 2010 that Her Majesty the Queen has approved the official regulations and design for the award of the Australian General Service Medal for Korea.
Former Defence Force personnel who completed 30 days participating in operations in South Korea (including any location within 161 kilometres seaward from the coast) during the post-armistice period from 28 July 1953 to 19 April 1956 – the date when the last Australian operational troops were withdrawn – are entitled to claim the medal. The medal is expected to be available for dispatch to eligible recipients before ANZAC Day 2010.
We have not yet seen the regulations but I’m sure they will be posted soon on the Australian Department of Defence website very soon.
No such luck for British Korean veterans.
